How to Build FIREPLACE MANTEL-103 Part 2: Material Inventory

[This is part of my FIREPLACE MANTEL-103 series.]

It’s big, it’s fancy, but it’s made from simple materials. Here’s the full inventory.

MDF Board Inventory $80.18

The foundation of this fireplace mantel are these three thicknesses of 4′ X 8′ mdf flat-stock. You will need at least one of each.

Molding & Millwork Inventory $252.20

1. PM-009 (1 ea.) = $12.80

2. CM-004 (1 ea.) = $13.20

This crown is one of the elements of this design you can change depending on the materials that are available to you locally.

There are many crown moldings that would work just as well in this position.

3. PM-013 (1 ea. 8′ stick) = $8.80

7. Corbel-001 (2 ea.) = $130.00

One of the reasons I don’t include many measurements in my tutorials is so you don’t get stuck if you can’t find the exact same corbels or other elements.

You will need to improvise like I do.

In fact, why not add your own signature to this design by finding your own corbels to install instead of these? There are so many to choose from.

8. PM-004 (4 ea.) = $19.20

I added an extra 8′ piece of this to the total because it’s so easy to tear a chunk off the end when cutting it. Better to have some extra on hand.

9. BB-002 (10′) = $24.50

I used a 5′ section for each side of the pilasters. You always want to create all of your sequential cuts from the same piece of molding, from the same end of that molding.
